Spring full-time Farm Worker

Full-time position – seasonal full time: We are looking for an employee to help start mushroom logs this spring.  This position is a great opportunity to get first hand exposure to a working mushroom farm, and I’m not stingy about sharing information or my experiences with mushroom farming or running a farm business.  The details are below.

inoculations with volunteers 2012

internship work: moving, cleaning, and inoculating mushroom logs, as well as other work such as harvesting mushrooms.  If you are unfamiliar with log cultivation, you may want to look at my blog posts or Facebook posts on inoculations for details.

timing: the start date and duration of the internships will depend on the weather and other factors, but I expect the work to extend from early March to the end of May, 2015.  The work is full time, that is 7 to 8 hours daily M-F, with an unpaid lunch hour in between.

internship location: at the farm in Ham Lake, MN, about a half hour north of the Twin Cities.  Interns are encouraged to carpool with me or with each other to the farm.  At this point it doesn’t look like there will be any option for interns to live on-farm.

compensation: The starting wage is $7.25 per hour, with payments to medicare and social security.  You will also get mushrooms from the farm.  No paid vacation or sick time is provided, but time off will be available on a case-by-case basis.

CTHM and log cultivation: CTHM is a mushroom farm that produces shiitake and other culinary and medicinal mushrooms for the Twin Cities area, as well as mushroom log kits and mushroom foods.  We also teach workshops on mushroom cultivation.

criteria for intern selection: I select employees based on physical dexterity, willingness to work hard, friendliness, good communication, and flexibility.  You don’t need to have had previous experience doing farm work, but I do expect applicants to have skill working carefully and quickly.  You should also be able to lift 50 lbs.

how to apply: Please send me an email or letter introducing yourself, as well as a resume and personal and professional references.  There is no deadline to apply, but I will fill the positions as soon as I can, ideally by February 25th, 2015.  I will want to meet you in person for a working interview – that is we’ll inoculate some logs , or do some other work, and we’ll speak more about the internship.  If you appear to be a good fit for the position I will contact your references.  You can reach me at: cherrytreehousemushrooms@gmail.com  I hope to hear from you!
